New on Board: Carolina Mourato

Tell us a bit about the work you’ll be doing at CCMAR.
Hello! I am working at the Scientific Dive Centre of CCMAR. My tasks as dive guide include guiding dives for scientific purposes, give a hand in dive courses being taught at the centre and help students practice and hone their skills underwater. Besides the educational part, I assist in monitorization and transplants of corals, seagrass and kelp on the coast of Portugal. One of my goals is to create maps of their distribution to share with the scientific community.

What were you doing before you joined us?
I got my international master’s degree in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation through the University of Ghent. I studied one year in Faro and after the degree I stayed and worked as a nature guide in Ria Formosa where I did tours in kayak, SUP, boat, bicycle and on foot.

What interests and hobbies do you enjoy when you are not doing science?
I enjoy doing all kinds of outdoor activities. When not outside, I enjoy reading and browse the internet on a variety of topics. As off last month I also started to learn the guitar (because it is more portable than my upright piano…).
