Marine megafauna bycatch mitigation trials in Southern Portugal

Room 2.31a I Building 7 I Gambelas Campus
Topic:
Worldwide, gradual depletion of marine resources has led to the increase of competition and negative interactions between fishermen and marine megafauna (e.g. cetaceans and marine birds). These events are responsible for severe conservation issues for many species, and sometimes economic constraints for fishers. Recent results on mitigation approaches in coastal fisheries operating in the Algarve will be presented.
About our speaker:
Ana Marçalo is a researcher at CCMAR with expertise in mitigation approaches to reduce interactions and bycatch of cetaceans and marine birds in Portuguese fisheries.
