Diatoms are a successful group in the phytoplankton distinguished by the ability to produce a variety of secondary metabolites, including oxylipins. We have identified and characterized lipoxygenase (LOX) sequences in the transcriptome of the diatom Skeletonema marinoi. Results have implications in ecophysiology, clarifying the pathway of oxylipins in diatoms, and in biotechnology, providing LOX with specific and unique characteristics that may open new horizon in industrial applications.
