IV Fish Welfare Summer Shoal
The summer shoal is back in 2022!
After a forced halt in the last two years, 2022 marks the return of the pioneer event gathering stakeholders in constructive dialogue around the welfare of fish. The Fishethogroup, fair-fish international and CCMAR are pleased to announce the IV Summer Shoal in Fish Ethology and Welfare 2022.
In recent times, the topic of fish welfare has been attracting growing interest, from academia and regulators to the general public. Now more than ever, this is the time for all stakeholders to meet in person, discuss and develop solutions for the welfare problems of fish. The 2022 edition of the Summer Shoal will once more take place in its very special format: a circle of discussion on fish welfare, under the sky, by the sea. Never like now a meeting in person made so much sense for the welfare of fish.
As stakeholder dialogue is our premise and the distinctive feature of our unique event, it is exclusive to 30 participants to allow the discussions to take place sitting in one big circle, in the open air, to stimulate the exchange of knowledge and ideas among scientists, industry, NGOs and policy makers. The participants will stay lodged in the resort and the concept is to have a "scientific retreat" dedicated to fish welfare. Offline and in person!
The 2022 edition will once again take place in the Algarve in southern Portugal, in the lovely small resort of Pedras del Rei at the Atlantic coast, half an hour by car east of the Faro airport. The meetings will be organised by the sea, in the heart of the Ria Formosa nature park and its marvellous barrier islands. Further info on the location here.

Note: The programme will absorb two full days from morning to evening, including ample time for exchanging ideas in an informal and creative environment. Therefore, participants are requested to ensure arrival on the evening of June 28 and to depart by July 1 in the morning.

Felicity Huntingford (Univ. of Glasgow)
Honoris Causa at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (2008), Jack Jones Lecture of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles (2012) and FSBI Beverton Medal (2013), 2016 Buckland Professor of Fisheries and Wood-Gush Memorial lecturer for the Society for Applied Ethology in 2019.
She has extraordinary knowledge and expertise in the natural sciences, having carried out teaching, training and research on a number of topics related to animal welfare, particularly fish. This broad interest is reflected in the textbooks she wrote: The Study of Animal Behaviour (1984), Animal Conflict (1987) and Aquaculture & Behaviour (2012). She has over 45 years of research experience on fish behaviour, in the laboratory, in the field, and in aquaculture systems. Her research has been supported by numerous funding agencies and has resulted in more than 225 scientific articles, 2 complete monographs, and 3 edited books.
Above all, Felicity is an exceptional speaker who will delight the audience with her impressive knowledge on the biology and welfare of fish, and it is a real privilege to have her as a plenary speaker in our Summer Shoal!
We are also thrilled to count on the participation of experienced and passionate actors in the Fish Industry:
- Garazi Rodríguez Valle, an aquaculture biologist responsible for the Production and Marketing plans at Apromar, the Spanish Aquaculture Association, and a UNE Aquaculture Standardization Committee member. With her extensive knowledge of the industry in Spain, Garazi Rodríguez Valle helps Spanish aquaculture plan for and reach sustainability. Within this scope, she will present to us the “Advances in Fish Welfare in the Spanish Aquaculture Sector”
- Auke Pasterkamp, General Manager and Founder of SeaConcept, a Dutch company dedicated to providing top-quality fish and seafood products. Focusing on transparency and a visible food chain, SeaConcept works closely with fishers in Holland, Norway, Iceland, and Alaska. At this year’s Summer Shoal, Auke Pasterkam will share his experience on “How we changed our fishery into stunning flatfish”.

We are looking for contributions, from academia and field, focusing on fish ethology and fish welfare in the wild and in aquaculture. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

Important Notes:
All participants are encouraged to present data, reviews or science-based perspectives on the welfare of fish or related topics.
In order to profit from the outdoor opportunities, we free ourselves from technical bonds and hold the conference in the open air, with the participants sitting in a circle of discussion. There will be no laser pointer, no projection, no screen and no computers. Therefore, bear in mind that once your abstract is accepted, we will send you guidelines to build your presentation in order to be printed. This will be the only visual aid to your talk, from which participants will follow your presentation.
The final version of your presentation must reach us before May 31 to give us the time to prepare the conference book, containing all contributions, which will be handed over to all registered participants.
