New Position: Joana F.Leal
Tell us a bit about the work you are/will be doing at CCMAR.
I will work with marine biotoxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) and diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP). Specifically, my ambition is to develop methodologies to remove or inactivate these biotoxins from marine aquatic systems. I will be working with professor M. Lurdes Cristiano in the OrgMedChem laboratory.
What were you doing before you joined us?
Before joining CCMAR, I had already been working on issues related to marine aquatic systems, namely the development of methodologies for removing antibiotics from these systems. After that, I also carried out studies for the removal of metals from water. More recently, I became interested in marine biotoxins and in the search for solutions to minimize the socio-economic impacts of this huge problem. My background is in Analytical Chemistry (University of Aveiro), with a strong environmental component.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I really enjoy walking around in nature and listening to its sounds. Also, contemplating the sea on sunny days and listening to good music is very relaxing for me.
