Workshop: FROM MOLECULES TO CRYSTALS AND BEYOND
Nucleations between chemistry and marine sciences.
Crystallization is a fundamental process that, besides well know applications in purification science, is also implicated in biological processes (e.g. biomineralization), diseases (e.g. galley stones, malaria), and possibly, according to some suggestions, the origin of life.
Crystallization is the “nucleation theme” of this workshop, bringing together researchers and students (graduation, PhD) interested in crystal genesis, molecular energetics, and marine sciences.
Fruitful cross fertilization is expected, given that molecular energetics is endemic to crystal formation and the sea is, for example, an important potential source of crystalline pharmaceuticals. Crystallization is on the other hand relevant for a variety of sea related fields (e.g. harvesting and characterization of sea salt, hard tissues of marine organisms). The capabilities of the techniques used to study crystals and crystallization (e.g. mass spectrometry, calorimetry) seem also to be underexplored in marine sciences.
The program is structured to foster ample discussion of the approaches, techniques, and research themes of chemists and marine scientists. If you want to contribute to this discussion with your own examples and wish to illustrate them with a poster and/or a slide (for the round-table), please feel free to do so (indicating this in the registration, instructions will then follow).
