SPECIAL EDITION: Oxygen loss within ocean upwelling circulations – Can sardines save our skins?

TOPIC: Comparative study of deoxygenation in upwelling zones

Concerns about enhanced deoxigenation of the ocean arise from the arguable likelihood that ocean upwelling systems will tend to further intensify as climate change proceeds. A comparative analysis is presented suggesting that plausible controlling variables may include (1) the strength of upwelling-favorable winds, (2) energy of eddy motions and (3) the potentially manageable abundance of sardine-type fishes.
