Sawfishes are unique looking relatives of rays and historically, inhabited tropical and sub-tropical waters worldwide. The seminar will describe Ruth Leeney's search over 8 years and 11 countries, to find where they still exist and to better understand what threatens their survival in low-income countries. Her work has revealed that sawfishes are now extinct from most of the African continent and has highlighted that conservation strategy that includes education and which take into account the socio-economic conditions of fishers are essential if sawfishes are to be effectively protected.

The seminar will be held on January 12, at 13:30, online via Zoom platform.
Participation is free, but mandatory to register. REGISTER HERE!
