Tell us a bit about the work you’ll be doing at CCMAR 

I am the Scientific Coordinator for the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO), an international consortium of world’s leading ocean science institutions, including CCMAR, which now hosts POGO’s satellite office.
POGO works towards the development of a truly global ocean observing system by acting in three fronts: innovation in ocean observing, capacity development and outreach & advocacy. My main activities include coordinate our training initiatives and alumni network, represent POGO at training venues and international meetings, and contribute to reports, publications and working groups coordination.

What were you doing before you joined us?

Since undergraduate, my research focused on using satellite-acquired data to study diverse aspects of ocean and coastal ecosystems. I have a background in observational oceanography, with a PhD from the University of Algarve, where I studied the relationship between environmental variability and spatio-temporal patterns of phytoplankton distribution and phenology.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Traveling is my favourite activity. I love visiting new places and experimenting different cultures and strongly believe it makes us humble and empathic. I also enjoy reading, watching series/movies, walk my dog and hang with friends.
Kind of a professional hobbie, every now and then I get to teach online resources for marine ecosystem analysis to international undergraduate and graduate ocean sciences students. In the past, and with support of CCMAR, we were able to provide these trainings in Cabo Verde and Angola, besides here at UAlg, and online.
