New book on fish welfare edited by CCMAR researchers

This is a very complete work concerning fish welfare because it addresses the theme through observation of various aquaculture species, studies on wild-caught fish and examples of experimental models, while also considering reviews on the assessment and improvement of rearing conditions.

“The book contributes to our understanding of the biology of captive fish species with some important discoveries about fish sentience (their ability to feel pain), new techniques for rearing fish, and new tools to address the issues surrounding their welfare. ”, says the researcher João L. Saraiva.

This is an important document on recent advances and research gaps that still exist on the subject, and testifies the commitment of all key stakeholders to improve the welfare of captive fish.

The book was launched simultaneously with a Fish Welfare Course, organized by CCMAR's Fish Ethology and Welfare group. This course was attended by renowned international speakers and more than 50 participants from eight countries, representing industry, universities, NGOs, oceanariums, veterinarians and government institutions, who spent three intensive days debating this thematic line.

These initiatives consolidate CCMAR and the Fish Ethology and Welfare group as key players in fish welfare research, applications and decision support consultancy. CCMAR is currently leading this discipline in Portugal and is already working in collaboration with the international aquaculture industry, aiming to expand the application of solutions for the fisheries and experimentation area.
