Rui Coelho is a researcher at IPMA - Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (Portuguese Institute for Ocean and Atmosphere) and member of the Fisheries, Biodiversity and Conservation Group of CCMAR. Rui is based in IPMA-Olhão.
Rui graduated in Biology at the Univ. Lisbon (2000), has a PhD in Fisheries Biology (Univ. Algarve, 2007) and an MSc in Statistical Modelling (Univ. Évora, 2013). During 2008-2010 was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Florida Museum of Natural History (Univ. Florida, USA). Since 2014 has been a Researcher at IPMA and is responsible for the swordfish and shark stocks in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, as well as other bycatch such as sea-turtles and sea-birds.
Most of the work carried out is related with stock assessments and providing scientific advice to the tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organizations for the Atlantic (ICCAT) and Indian (IOTC) Oceans. Within the Indian Ocean, he was Chair of the Working Party on Ecosystems and Bycatch (WPEB) between 2014-2017, and Chair of the Working Party on Billfishes (WPB) between 2017-2019. In the Atlantic (ICCAT) he has been the Coordinator of the Swordfish Species Group since 2015, and was the Vice-President of the Standing Committee on Research and Statistics (SCRS) between 2019-2021, the scientific body responsible for providing the final scientific advice to the ICCAT Commission. Rui has published more than 90 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has more than 160 technical papers presented to the Regional Fisheries Management Organizations.
