PhD in Fish Pheromones

Applications are invited for a PhD candidate to work under a project funded by the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) entitled “FIGHT – Hormonal, pheromonal and genomic regulation of aggression in a fish model“. The candidate is expected to devote full-time to research in chemical communication in fish under the context of this project. The PhD position will be developed in cotutelle between the University of Saint Joseph, in Macao, and the University of the Algarve, in Portugal, with an approximately equal period of studies taking place at each institution. Upon successful public defense of the thesis, the candidate will be awarded with a double degree diploma (one from each University). The position is expected to start on 01 January 2019.

At the University of Saint Joseph, the candidate will work at the Institute of Science and Environment under the supervision of Professor David Gonçalves. At the University of the Algarve, the candidate will work at Centro de Ciências do Mar under the supervision of Professors Adelino Canário and Peter Hubbard.

Qualifications required: We are looking for a candidate with a Master degree in biology, biochemistry or related areas. Previous experience with fish models will be valued.

Duties: Perform independent experiments applying different methods in animal behaviour, electrophysiology, analytical chemistry, molecular biology and similar fields, including data collection and analysis; report results in conferences and independently write and submit scientific publications; participate in other lab activities, such as science promotion events or internal meetings.

Conditions: The project has an initial funding for a PhD scholarship for 30 months covering tuition fees and a monthly allowance. Further funding will be sought during the execution of the project up to a total duration of 48 months. Selection criteria: 40% academic background: 20% previous experience in areas relevant for the project; 20% academic publications and conference presentations; 20% interview and motivation letter.
