New on Board: Tatiana Varela

Tell us a bit about the work you’ll be doing at CCMAR.
I will be working with the Comparative, Adaptive and Functional Skeletal Biology group. The main purpose of my work is to develop a database of genetic mutations associated with several human pathologies, including the type of mutation, chromosome and gene location and its consequence at protein level. Furthermore, I will also analyse the functional effect of the most relevant identified mutations.

What were you doing before you joined us?

Over the past years I’ve been developing my academic path. I completed my BSc in Biochemistry and spent the last two years doing a MSc in Molecular and Microbial Biology, which I completed later last year. During my master thesis, I worked at CCMAR’s BIOSKEL group with the main goal of analyse the transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of a gene associated with colorectal cancer.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
In my free time I enjoy spending quality time with my friends and family, going to the cinema and watch/play football. I also really like to travel and explore new places and cultures. Moreover, I’m a beach lover so whenever the weather is good I like to go to the beach to swim and relax.
