Alexandra Teodósio is an Associate Professor with research in feeding ecology, from jellies to marine turtles, and about the effects of global changes, namely freshwater discharges, gelatinous blooms, microplastics, non native species and ocean acidification on marine ecosystems. Her teaching activity are related to Invertebrate Biology, Biological Oceanography and Marine ecosystems. She is the co-coordinator of the master programmes in Marine Biology and in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation. She has supervised six PhD students, 20 masters’ students, and over 30 undergraduates. She is an Associate Editor of the Estuarine Coastal Shelf Science Journal. She is member of the Expertpanel BIO3: Biodiversity and Ecology of the Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO), She has been involved in 22 European and national funded research projects. She has published more than 80 peer-reviewed research articles, and has contributed to six book chapters.

Nova espécie invasora detetada no estuário do Guadiana

Nos últimos anos, os investigadores do Centro de Ciências do Mar (CCMAR) reportaram o aparecimento de mais de uma dezena de espécies invasoras no estuário do Guadiana. A nova espécie detetada é um hidróide, que ao incrustar-se em estruturas artificiais traz efeitos negativos não só a nível do ecossistema, mas também a nível sócio-económico.

A corvina americana, ou corvinata, não é natural de águas nacionais, mas mesmo tratando-se de uma espécie invasora já está instalada nos estuários dos nossos rios. Por isso, os investigadores do CCMAR vão dar a conhecer numa prova de degustação, de que forma se pode consumir este peixe e assim tentar aliviar a pressão que esta espécie faz nos nossos recursos pesqueiros.

Os investigadores do Centro de Ciências do Mar (CCMAR) descobriram no estuário do Guadiana um valioso recurso pesqueiro: o caranguejo-azul, uma espécie característica da América do Norte, que agora vive a mais de sete mil quilómetros de casa.

Investigadores do Centro juntaram-se a outros peritos da UAlg para participar num exercício de simulação de um derrame de petróleo. A equipa do Centro ficou encarregue de simular a recolha e análise de amostras de água com organismos planctónicos, um passo fundamental para avaliar o estado do ecossistema antes e depois de um acidente.

A etapa da Volta a Portugal de hoje termina em Albufeira, onde o CCMAR vai marcar presença, mostrando um pouco da sua atividade científica na área do mapeamento marinho e projetos mais recentes no combate aos microplásticos.

Francisco Leitão, Alexandra Teodósio and João Encarnação went to Quelimane, Moçambique to participate in the kickoff of the project BioFISH.

Records of tropical and sub-tropical species in the Portuguese Southwest coast points to a poleward shift in species distribution.

Marine plastics are one of todays biggest problems. In order to deal with this problem various sectors of society come together in an event organised by CCMAR, Ualg and DECO-Algarve.

The girl's movers, Cláudia and Isilda, came to meet women who inspire them in the area of marine sciences and learn about the work developed by CCMAR researchers.

Our Doctor Vânia Baptista concluded her thesis, on the 30^th of October, about the Influence of oceanography and larvae behavior on the recruitment of temperate fishes.

Our researchers Alexandra Teodósio and Vânia Baptista participated in a study that was recently published in Scientific Reports.

A recent study by Joana Cruz and Alexandra Teodósio reveals how plankton communities in coastal lagoons respond to changes in a short temporal scale.

The CCMAR collaborated with the Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente in the Environmental Volunteering for Water, a program that made possible the development of a simple metric for monitoring aquatic invertebrates, to be used by volunteers.

Our researchers tested if fish larvae show some individuality throughout their growth.

The study demonstrated the relevance of combining fish larvae behaviour and oceanography processes in modelling the dispersion of fish larvae to estimate recruitment.

This study led by our researchers in collaboration with two institutions from Quelimane aims to increase the quality of life of fishing communities and the artisanal and subsistence fishing sector in Mozambique.

CCMAR's NEMA project participates with the organization of two Underwater FotoBlitz. The initiative takes place across the country from 10 to 18 October.

Alexandra Teodósio and Joana Cruz wrote a chapter about the impacts of the ocean acidification on zooplankton communities in the book "Zooplankton Ecology".

Biological invasions are one of the many consequences of a globalized world. Thus, early detection and eradication of invasive species are crucial to prevent significant economic impacts.

Portuguese consumers are willing to include weakfish, an invasive species, on their grocery list.

On this trip, our researchers presented the LittleFish-STP project which aims to study the little fish and capacitate local communities, fishermen and government about the management of this and other threatened fish species.

During the conference week, our researchers participated in several events that highlighted the importance of preserving and conserving the oceans and marine life.

Our researchers went to Angola to discuss the results of project LUANDAWATERFRONT.
