Research Interests

The main research interests are the comparative physiology and endocrinology of fishes, particularly chemosensory biology in relation to reproduction and behaviour, sex determination and puberty, osmoregulatory systems and adaptation to extreme and special environments. Research in Antarctica focuses on physiological and transcriptomic adjustments to global change, osmoregulation and temperature adaptation.

Inauguração e apresentação da infraestrutura EMBRC

Foi inaugurado esta manhã, pelo ministro da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior, o nó português da infraestrutura EMBRC.

O Centro de Ciências do Mar (CCMAR) é parceiro em dois grandes projetos, financiados pela União Europeia, através de fundos H2020, o PerformFISH e o MedAID. Ambos os projetos serão desenvolvidos por equipas do CCMAR, durante os próximos quatro e cinco anos, respetivamente.

Os cientistas já sabiam que muitas espécies usam a comunicação química nas suas interações sociais, mas num estudo recentemente publicado na revista Scientific Reports, um grupo de investigadores do Centro de Ciências do Mar, dá conta de que o peixe tilápia moçambicana usa estes sinais para reduzir a violência nos combates. Os cientistas reportam também que os machos ao cheirarem a urina dos dominantes aumentam as suas hormonas sexuais.

Aquaexcel2020 é a rede de investigação que reúne os maiores peritos na área da Aquacultura europeia.

Os peixes estão a perder capacidade olfactiva devido à acidificação dos oceanos causada pelo aumento do dióxido de carbono na atmosfera. Uma equipa de investigadores que integra membros do Centro de Ciências do Mar (CCMAR) acaba de publicar um estudo na revista Nature Climate Change que reforça a grande apreensão da comunidade científica em relação à acidificação dos oceanos e seu impacto nas espécies que nele habitam.

CCMAR is, during these days, in Galway (Ireland) promoting a Workshop about user communities engagement. This workshop is part of the work package that CCMAR leads in the Assemble Plus project.

Stefan Abreu Fernandes, MSc student of the CEIB group, won the award for the best scientific poster with his presentation at the XI Portuguese Conference on Polar Sciences.

Reduce food loss and waste and improve water management in the Mediterranean agro-food supply chain are the main objectives of FRUALGAE, a new CCMAR project.

The Scientific Call will be delivered today at COP 26, during the meeting of the heads of state and governments of the Ocean Panel. Adelino Canário, Board Director of CCMAR and Professor at the University of Algarve, is one of the signatories.

The ingestion of contaminated bivalves are a common public health problem in Africa. The new CCMAR project, HealthyBi4Namiby, wants to improve food safety and reduce health risks for the consumption of bivalves in Angola.

Our researchers Adelino Canário and João Cardoso flew to Namibe to study the threats and possible contaminations of shellfish.

Adelino Canário, director of CCMAR and professor at the University of Algarve, has been nominated chair of the General Assembly of the EMBRC, which decides the strategy, management and scientific development.

João Cardoso, Adelino Canário and Inês Leal went to Namibe, in Angola, for the second sampling field trip of the project HeathyBi4Namibe.

Our researchers wanted to understand how the growth of bivalve shells is regulated. They identified long noncoding RNAs, as candidate biomineralisation-related genes involved in shell growth and maintenance.
